
Alexander M. Spiess, M.D. is a fellowship trained Hand and Upper Extremity surgeon and Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon. He treats all problems related to the hand, wrist, and elbow, including fractures, ligament, tendon, and nerve injuries. Utilizing his plastic surgical expertise, he is also involved with the reconstruction of soft tissue injuries to the upper and lower extremities. He offers Botox© office injections for facial rejuvenation, and post stroke or cerebral palsy related upper extremity muscle spasticity.
Dr. Spiess attended University of Illinois at Chicago Medical School, and graduated with honors, including induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his plastic surgery training at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He completed fellowships in Hand and Microsurgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Thomas Jefferson University/Philadelphia Hand Center. During these two years of hand and upper extremity subspecialty training, Dr. Spiess learned advanced arthroscopic techniques for the evaluation of wrist and elbow pathology. He was also exposed to the latest techniques for the treatment of hand, wrist, and elbow fractures and ligament injuries. He has developed special interest in the treatment of complex wrist ligament tears and instability patterns. He has developed an interest in the treatment of adult post traumatic brachial plexus and other upper extremity nerve injuries, utilizing state of the art nerve transfer techniques for the treatment of these injuries. As a plastic surgeon, he is also available for reconstruction of soft tissue injuries to the upper and lower extremity, utilizing local, regional, or free flap techniques and skin grafting.
Dr. Spiess is currently seeing patients in the Pittsburgh area, including the North Side, Wexford, Century III/West Mifflin, and Monroeville. He offers Botox© injections for facial rejuvenation at these office locations as well. He is a member of various professional societies, including the American Medical Association, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the American Association of Hand Surgery.
