
Christopher C. Schmidt, MD is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in disorders of the shoulder, elbow and hand. He has been practicing medicine for over twelve years, the last eight years in the Pittsburgh area. Prior to coming back to Pittsburgh, Dr. Schmidt was a faculty member at the Ohio State University and Director of Upper Extremity for the Mt. Carmel Orthopedic Residency Program.
Dr. Schmidt has been in the forefront in the treatment of ligament, tendon, bone, and nerve injuries, and arthritic joint conditions. He was one of the first physicians in Pittsburgh to perform all arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs, minimally invasive distal bicep reattachments, and reverse total shoulder replacements. Dr. Schmidt performs arthroscopic and joint replacement surgery for the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. He also treats common ailments such as carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren's contracture, and basal joint arthritis. He has published numerous peer review articles, written a number of book chapters, and won national awards for his work, such as the "O'Donoghue Sports Injury Research Award" given by the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine. He also has been on the editorial board for "Operative Techniques in Orthopedics".
Dr. Schmidt will see patients of all age groups ranging from the child with a congenital hand deformity to the elderly grandmother with elbow arthritis. A large percentage of his time is focused on the injured worker. He not only specializes in the treatment of the acute injuries, but also the reconstruction of chronic deformities. His particular areas of interest and expertise involve: 1) arthroscopic techniques, 2) joint replacement, 3) fracture reductions and stabilizations, 4) nerve, tendon, and ligament repairs, of the shoulder, elbow, and hand.
