Darren A. Frank, M.D. is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine. He has particular interest in treatment of a variety of problems involving the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle and foot. Dr. Frank came to Pittsburgh to attend college, and has lived in the area ever since. He attended medical school at MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine (now Drexel University School of Medicine). Here he developed his interest in orthopaedic surgery, and graduated with honors, including induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
Dr. Frank completed his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He served as chief resident in his final year, and pursued a sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery fellowship upon completion of his residency. Dr. Frank spent a year in New York City, at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. Here he learned cutting edge arthroscopic reconstructive techniques to treat a variety of orthopaedic problems. During his fellowship, Dr. Frank had the opportunity to provide care for athletes at the high school, collegiate, and professional level. Following his sports medicine fellowship, Dr. Frank returned to Pittsburgh and received additional training in surgery of the foot and ankle, focusing on sports related injuries. He remains academically active, training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons and performing research. Dr. Frank has received several awards in recognition of his work, and he has presented and published his research at the national level in the areas of ACL reconstruction and rotator cuff repair.
Dr. Frank is currently seeing patients in the Pittsburgh region. He is one of the team physicians for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, as well as several area high schools. Although he specializes in sports injuries, Dr. Frank also sees patients with non-athletic injuries and degenerative problems. All injuries do not require surgery and when necessary Dr. Frank will use the latest arthroscopic techniques to treat the majority of shoulder, knee, hip and ankle problems. His particular interest and areas of expertise involve ACL injury and reconstruction, cartilage injuries of the knee and shoulder reconstruction (including rotator cuff repair and instability surgery) and athletic injuries of the foot and ankle.
