
Thomas B. Hughes, M.D. is a fellowship-trained, board certified orthopaedic surgeon. He specializes in the treatment of hand, elbow, and shoulder disorders. He has a special interest in carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist and elbow arthritis, and rotator cuff disease. He is also trained in nerve and microvascular surgery.
Dr. Hughes grew-up in the Pittsburgh area. He attended Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh and Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, PA. He obtained his medical degree from The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia while his orthopaedic internship and residency were performed at Allegheny General Hospital. He then completed a fellowship in Hand, Upper-Extremity, and Microvascular Surgery at Brown University in Providence, RI. He is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery.
Dr. Hughes is a leader in his field. He is a board member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and The American Association of Hand Surgeons. As an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Drexel University School of Medicine, he is an educator of future physicians and orthopaedic surgeons. He is the medical student director for orthopaedics, the assistant program director of the orthopaedic residency, and a "Golden Mallet" award winner for excellence in orthopaedic education.
Dr. Hughes is currently on staff at Allegheny General Hospital (Main and Suburban Campus), The Forbes Regional campus of West-Penn Hospital, and at UPMC Passavant Hospital (Main and Cranberry campuses). He provides non-operative and operative treatment of all disorders of the upper-limb. To be conveniently available to patients, he sees patients at multiple office locations around the greater Pittsburgh region and accepts almost all insurance products.
