Residents passing through Allegheny General Hospital become well rounded Orthopedic Surgeons. The operative experience at AGH is extensive and begins during the 3 months orthopaedic rotation during the PGY 1 year. Early involvement in hands-on operative techniques allows the resident to refine and perfect their abilities over the 5 year program.

During the Orthopaedic Internship, residents spend 3 months on the Orthopaedic rotation. When on Orthopedic electives, the PGY 1 resident is primarily responsible for the emergency department and consults. During down time, however, the interns are encouraged to participate in the OR.

Case logs begin in the PGY 2 year. PGY 5 residents leave the program with 1,800-2,500 procedures logged over the course of 4 years. Because of the attending to resident ratio, it is rare for more than one resident to be present in surgical case, but not uncommon for cases to go without resident coverage. This allows the resident to get a tremendous hands on surgical experience.
