Allegheny Orthopedic Associates
Research

The department of orthopaedic surgery believes that some research effort is good for resident education and values any contribution that the resident can make to advancing orthopaedic knowledge. To that end Stephen Conti, M.D. serves as a director of orthopaedic research to oversee and coordinate all research by faculty and residents. Currently orthopaedic faculty members, fellows and residents are engaged in clinical research reviewing results of treatment, biomechanical research under the direction of Mark Miller, PhD and orthopaedic microbiological research through the efforts of William Costerton, PhD. Each resident is expected to participate in at least one research project during the course of his/her residency. This project may be either a clinical or basic science project, but the results of their work must be presented at the Annual Orthopedic Resident Research Day, which is held in the Spring, as well as the Annual AGH Resident Research Day held in May. Residents are allocated protected research time each week which they use for reading and research. A one to two month research block may be granted on a case by case basis if outside funding for research is obtained by the resident and they demonstrate a need for dedicated research time to complete the project. A completed manuscript must be prepared and approved by the Chairman in order to be eligible for graduation.
