Orthopaedic Spine

Comprised of a complex arrangement of bones, discs, ligaments and muscles, the spine is one of the most remarkable mechanisms of the body. Not only does it provide the stability we use to stand upright and the flexibility we need for active movement, the spine also serves as a durable, protective shield for the nerve pathways that transmit vital information through the spinal column.

But the spine is also one of the body's most delicate structures and is vulnerable to a variety of disorders. Back pain and restricted mobility are frequently caused by a sedentary lifestyle, poor posture, poor physical conditioning, improper body mechanics and the prolonged repetitive use of incorrect bending or lifting techniques, along with certain diseases and traumatic injury. More than 8 of every 10 Americans will experience a lifestyle-altering episode of back pain at some point in their lives, and 90 percent of single episodes of back pain become recurrent.

At the Division of Orthopaedic Spine, preventing and providing relief for back pain and spinal disorders is our forte. Our highlyqualified physicians specialize in:

  • Traumatic and overuse injuries to the spine
  • Spinal deformities, both acquired and congenital
  • Whiplash injuries
  • Systemic diseases affecting spinal function
  • Degenerative spinal conditions such as arthritis
  • Spinal osteoporosis
  • Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis
  • Herniated disc
  • Scoliosis and kyphosis
  • Soft-tissue sprains, strains and contusions
  • Work-related back pain
  • Mechanical back dysfunction
  • Fractures, dislocations and subluxations
  • Spinal tumors

After effectively establishing a diagnosis, our team of specialists develops a plan of care that best meets the needs of each patient suffering from a spinal problem. A variety of non-surgical treatment options are first explored, including prescribed rest, exercise and conditioning programs, such as physical therapy. If these methods do not correct the problem, our surgeons use the latest minimally invasive techniques to restore a more normal contour to the spine, minimize or eliminate pain, and restore mobility.
